JULY 2004: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO....?

The Share our Story section of the web page is completing three years. We thought you might wonder what has happened to some of the Sisters who have been featured in these stories.

Sister Anne Carlino
Sister Anne continues to serve at the San Damiano Mission in Kemondo, Tanzania. Sister Anne has been the "general contractor" for the construction of the convent in Kemondo as well as for the renovation of the Mission Church of San Damiano and the Formation Center for the Bukoba Diocese at the Mission Compound.

Stefanie Koester, a Lay Associate of the Hospital Sisters as well as a pioneer missionary to Kemondo with Sister Anne, decided to join the Hospital Sisters and is now completing the first year of her novitiate in the USA. In 2002, Sister Miriam Fujioka from the Japan Province and Sister Euphemia Turkiewicz from the Polish Province joined the missionary community in Kemondo. The religious Community of Hospital Sisters serving in Kemondo certainly is an international one!

The Sisters are engaged in a variety of ministries in Kemondo and the surrounding areas. They work with handicapped children, staff a small health care dispensary, and teach English to children and young adults. Sister Anne is serving as a consultant for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kagondo, a village about 10 miles from Kemondo. The Bukoba Diocese is responsible for that hospital and is undertaking an extensive renovation project.

At the present time Sister Anne is in the USA for some well-deserved "R&R" but plans to return to Kemondo in September. Her service to the poor in Kemondo continues to beckon her!

Sister Jocelyn Serwatka
Since February 2002, Sister Jocelyn has been a very busy person. In August 2002, Sister was the recipient of the Peace Maker Award from the Franciscan Federation. She received this honor during the annual conference in St. Louis. In addition, the Illinois House of Representatives honored her for her advocacy work in the fall of 2002.

In December 2003, Sister Jocelyn retired from her position as Coordinator of the Justice Concerns Office. She then participated in a sabbatical program at the Cenacle Spiritual Life Center in Lantana, Florida from January through March, 2004. Sister describes this as an enriching experience for which she is grateful.

Soon Sister will travel to Japan with five other sisters from the American Province to participate in a three week pilgrimage sponsored by the Japan Province. Sisters from the German and Polish Provinces will be part of the program as well.

When she is not traveling, Sister assists in the library at the Motherhouse in Springfield, volunteers at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, is active at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Decatur, and is involved with the Hospital Sisters Lay Associate Program. Although Sister Jocelyn "retired" from the Justice Concerns Office, she is certainly not among those who have retired from life and ministry!

R. I. P.
Four Sisters whose stories were featured in this section have been called to their eternal reward since that time.

Sister Gudelia Hennek's story was featured in May 2002. Sister died on February 5, 2003 at the age of 89.
Sister Adriana Pogrzeba celebrated her 100th birthday in June 2002; her story was featured in July of that year. Within four months of her 100th birthday, she died at the Motherhouse.
Sister Francis Regis Dobiesz helped write her interesting story in August 2002. She died one year later just three days before her 90th birthday.
Sister Annette Heymanns, whose story was featured in November 2002, died on January 21, 2004 just five days after her 97th birthday.

May these and all of our faithful departed rest in peace.
